Day one of Flipkart's sale: most prices held

· by

Flipkart's Big Billion Days opened today. Yesterday we ran the same check on Amazon's first day. This is Flipkart.

On day one, most of the Flipkart prices we checked hadn't moved much.

Bar chart by category comparing each in-stock Flipkart listing's price on 9 October with the same listing's usual price from 17 September to 6 October. Of 34 prices, 23 stayed within 10%, 8 fell by 10% or more and 3 rose by 10% or more. Hair dryers: 3 fell, 1 rose, of 11. Straighteners: 1 fell, 2 rose, of 8. Trimmers: 3 fell, none rose, of 8. Other: 1 fell, none rose, of 7.

The numbers

For each product, we took the Flipkart listing we checked today and set its price against that same listing's usual price from 17 September to 6 October, the middle of everything we recorded in those weeks. We only counted listings that showed as in stock, today and before.

Sale-day price, against the three weeks before Prices
About the same, within 10% 23
Fell by 10% or more 8
Rose by 10% or more 3

Of the 23, 12 were exactly the same price as before, to the rupee. The typical move across all 34 was no change at all.

Where prices did fall, they fell a fair way. The typical fall was 22%, and 6 of the 8 fell by 20% or more. Ten of the 34 were below the lowest price we recorded for them in the three weeks before.

Against the older record, 18 August to 17 September, 9 were 10% or more lower, 17 were within 10% and 8 were 10% or more higher.

Two things we left out

Out of stock listings. 15 of the Flipkart listings we checked this morning showed as out of stock. A price on a listing you can't buy isn't a sale price, so they're not in the count.

Other listings of the same product. Some products sit on Flipkart under more than one listing. We compare a listing only with its own past, so a cheaper listing we didn't check today can't make the price look as if it rose.

We rechecked yesterday's Amazon figures the same way. They don't change.

The badge

The typical discount badge on these 34 listings was 29% off. The typical move against the recent price was nothing. As with Amazon, the badge is worked out from the MRP and the move from the recent price, so the two rarely match.

Three examples

A Philips HP8142 hair dryer had a usual price of ₹1,000 across 10 readings. Today it was ₹629, a drop of 37%. Its badge said 45% off.

A Braun AIO5540 trimmer had a usual price of ₹4,055 across 14 readings. Today it was ₹4,001, about the same. Its badge said 20% off.

A Vega VHDH22 hair dryer had a usual price of ₹976 across 5 readings. Today the same listing showed ₹1,753, close to its MRP of ₹1,799.

We picked these because each has several readings behind it.

What it means if you're shopping today

Some real drops are there, and a few are large. But on most of what we checked, today's price is last week's price. The badge won't tell you which is which.

Every product we track has its pre-sale figures on the pre-sale prices page. Look up the one you want and set today's price against it.

What this does not show

It's the first morning. These prices were recorded between about 11 am and noon on 9 October. Sale prices change through the day and through the week, and some deals open later.

It's the listed price. Bank, card and coupon offers come on top and depend on how you pay. We don't include them.

Don't set it against yesterday's Amazon numbers. They're different products, on a different day, at a different point in each sale. It says nothing about which site is cheaper.

It's 34 prices. Products are checked in rotation, and the category groups are small. Two straighteners rising is a count, not a trend.

It doesn't show why. A listing's price can move because of the sale, a seller change, stock, or a new batch. From outside these look the same, and we don't guess.

It's a record, not a verdict. A drop is not proof of a bargain and a rise is not wrongdoing. It shows what we observed and when.

The week-before and August records are frozen and free to reuse under CC BY 4.0, from the pre-sale prices page. Sale-day figures recorded on Flipkart on 9 October 2026.
